La empresa, que tiene casi 50 años en el mercado, enfrenta retos como IVA, altos arriendos y la llegada de nuevas cadenas que la han llevado a transformarse

Oma nació en 1970 y desde esa fecha ha logrado incursionar en varios productos y formatos como barras de café o empacados, con los que ha logrado conquistar 20% del mercado local.

Tras casi 50 años de operación y debido a los rumores que empezaron a aparecer en redes sociales sobre el cierre, Marlon Masis, presidente de Mesofoods (empresa dueña de Presto y Oma), aclaró que “la nueva dinámica del mercado ha llevado a este segmento a transformarse por la incursión de nuevos actores y una nueva oferta”, sin embargo, aclaró que “el término crisis no aplica al caso de Oma”.

¿Oma está pasando por una crisis?
Es totalmente falso que Oma esté a punto de cerrar su operación. ‘Crisis’ es un término radical que no aplica al caso de Oma. Efectivamente, como marca tuvimos en 2018 un desempeño menos positivo de lo esperado. No obstante, los resultados hoy me permiten afirmar sin titubeos que la marca goza de buena salud, y que están disponibles los recursos necesarios para continuar su camino de liderazgo y tradición en el mercado colombiano.

¿Cuánto invertirán en la estrategia este año?
En 2019 las inversiones en Oma estarán por el orden de US$7,5 millones. Las inversiones futuras estarán ligadas al cumplimiento de nuestro ‘mega 2023’, que consiste en doblar el Ebitda actual.

¿Cuánto venden en promedio cada punto de Oma?
En promedio, en cada punto de venta de Oma en 2019 vendemos $35 millones mensuales, lo que refleja un alza de 4,7% vs. 2018.

¿Cómo le fue a Oma al cierre del año pasado?
La nueva dinámica del mercado ha llevado este segmento a transformarse a raíz de la incursión de nuevos actores y de una nueva oferta. Como resultado, en OMA hemos tenido que enfrentar grandes retos para mantener una posición destacada en el sector. Para nosotros 2018 fue un año de redefinición y reformulación estratégica. Aunque no se alcanzaron los resultados financieros esperados en crecimiento comercial ni utilidad neta fue un año determinante para avanzar en la reestructuración de la empresa, gestión que viene acompañada por el nuevo direccionamiento que es el que está en marcha hoy.

¿Cuánta participación del mercado tiene la marca Oma?
A 2018, Oma tiene una participación cercana a 20% del mercado, en valor.

¿En qué consiste el plan?
Las decisiones adoptadas en este nuevo direccionamiento contemplan una ruta de consolidación operativa, la cual abarca la reestructuración del negocio de restaurantes, donde mantendremos los más rentables, logrando de esta manera concentrar los mayores esfuerzos en las casi 200 barras de café que tenemos en todo el país. Esperamos que el redireccionamiento de las acciones de marketing, a través del entendimiento profundo del consumidor local, la adopción de nuevos medios de pago, y la innovación continua del producto, así como el diseño de planes de compensación y carrera para nuestros colaboradores, nos lleven en 2019 a lograr los objetivos comerciales y conquistar a los consumidores.

¿Cuántos puntos cerraron?
En 2019 hemos cerrado 19 tiendas de café y dos restaurantes, mientras se trabaja en la remodelación de ocho ubicaciones existentes y en la reubicación de 3 tiendas en diferentes ciudades del país, y tres nuevas aperturas. Este proceso de cierres y reubicaciones es normal en la industria de bebidas y alimentos, pues permite dinamizar y potenciar las locaciones que presentan el mejor desempeño, además de tomar decisiones importantes sobre las locaciones que no están cumpliendo con las expectativas financieras, impactadas por agentes externos y ajenos a nuestro control.

¿Desde cuándo se verán los cambios de Oma?
Entre el cuarto trimestre de 2019 y el primero de 2020.

¿Tendrán alianzas?
Si, Oma es una marca fuerte y muy atractiva para varias compañías en Colombia. Por ahora no puedo anticipar mucho, pero les anuncio que se vienen grandes noticias en el segundo semestre para todos nuestros clientes.

¿Qué retos tienen?
Dar continuidad al proceso de educación al consumidor, construir afinidad con nuevas audiencias, especialmente con los denominados milenials, a través de innovación en formatos, productos, delivery y medios de pago; y el impacto del IVA en los arriendos y el precio, sumado al uso tradicional de varias cadenas, franquicias y restaurantes, ha obligado a realizar cierres para mantener la eficiencia natural en las estructuras de costos. Este es un reto fundamental que como industria todos debemos abordar.

¿Por qué decidieron apostarle a una nueva estrategia?
En Colombia, el sector del café es quizás uno de los que ha mostrado una mayor dinámica en los últimos años gracias a la entrada al país de nuevas marcas globales y a la fuerza que han tomado algunas marcas locales. Por tal motivo, como grupo empresarial, nos anticipamos a tomar las medidas pertinentes para promover la continuidad y la competitividad de nuestras marcas, en el marco de un nuevo entorno comercial y de mercado.

¿Cuál es la nueva dinámica del mercado?
La nueva dinámica de mercado obedece a un escenario más competido, con jugadores locales y globales con modelos de negocio diferentes, algunos con enfoque en crecer y expandirse, mientras que otros enfocados en optimizar y ser rentables. Para esto, todos los competidores está haciendo una apuesta agresiva con tácticas promocionales y de oferta para capturar mercado.

¿Cómo es el consumidor hoy en día?
Esta dinámica surge como respuesta a un consumidor que persigue la conveniencia, en términos de calidad, tiempo y desembolso. Pero también es un consumidor que esta fraccionado: por un lado ávido de experiencias, en busca de productos de alta indulgencia y con sensibilidad frente a la preparación y la recomendación, y por lo cual está dispuesto a pagar. Por otro lado, tenemos un consumidor más conforme, que ha ajustado sus expectativas frente al producto, la calidad y la experiencia para acceder a las nuevas categorías de consumo y lograr que su ingreso ‘rinda’ más.

Pronto estaremos contando nuevas noticias también para esta marca tan icónica para los colombianos.
