Un país perteneciente a la Organización de Países Exportadores de Petróleo (OPEP) se propuso en 2010 instalar el parque de paneles solares de mayor extensión del planeta, aprovechándose de un basto desierto de sol sin nubes ni lluvia. Se trata de Emiratos Árabes Unidos, cuyo fundo soberano de inversión desembolsó US$871 millones para que en 2019 se hiciera realidad la entrada en operación de Noor Abu Dhabi.
Pese a que sus reservas probadas de petróleo comercialmente explotable son equivalentes a 97,000 millones de barriles, decidieron dar un paso agigantado hacia la energía verde apartando ocho kilómetros cuadrados para colocar tres millones de paneles solares, que aumentará en 1,177 megavatios la capacidad instalada de electricidad de la nación del Golfo Pérsico, energía suficiente para suplir la demanda de 90,000 personas.
Es parte de una estrategia de Emiratos de convertirse en una economía de servicios para 2050, donde el turismo juegue un papel fundamental, apalancados en el atractivo de las infraestructuras que financian con las ganancias de la exportación de crudo, que suma US$40,000 millones, más otros US$21,000 millones de ventas foráneas por concepto de refinados del hidrocarburo.
Parte de esa estrategia consiste en reducir al mínimo el dióxido de carbono con una generación de energía limpia que pondere el 50 % de la demanda de electricidad de los Emiratos, lo que incluyen los vehículos eléctricos y el transporte público también movido eventualmente por electricidad, sistema que por ahora funciona carburando gas natural, recurso del que tienen 6,000 millones de metros cúbicos en reservas comprobadas, señala la OPEP.
