Cualquiera que sea el punto de vista que se adopte al examinar sus obras, es innegable que Augusto Rodin (1840-1917) fue un genio excepcionalmente dotado para la escultura.
El escultor más famoso de Francia fue contemporáneo del Impresionismo y es considerado ‘el padre de la escultura moderna’. Con él se acabó eso de buscar la mimesis y creó un nuevo concepto escultórico en lo referente al monumento y la escultura pública. Fue criticado en su época por lo “inacabado” de muchas de sus obras, pero ese modelado espontáneo y expresivo será, como sabemos, el futuro.
De formación neoclásica, Rodin se inspiró en artistas como Donatello o Miguel Ángel pero tenía un espíritu experimentador y audaz, en el que destaca una radical innovación (algo que lo enmarca de alguna forma en el movimiento romántico), por lo que vivió siempre envuelto en grandes polémicas en torno a sus obra.
Sus creaciones abarcan toda la gama de posibilidades plásticas, de lo espontáneo al patetismo heroico. Para él, el caos podía ser una herramienta eficaz para plasmar sus intenciones. También estuvo vinculado al impresionismo, tanto por amistades como por el uso de la luz en sus obras.
Lo que queda claro es que para el escultor, un artista no debía ser un esclavo del modelo. En su estudio-taller llamaba la atención ver a modelos desnudos sin posar y a Rodin observándolos en su libertad de movimientos y plasmándolos en su totalidad. Quizás por ello su obra sea tan poco rígida, tan viva y llena de matices.
Rodin cosechó elogios por más de un siglo, por ser considerado como el pionero de la escultura moderna. Con muestras de su obra en el mundo, su legado sigue siendo estudiado y profundamente admirado por compañeros artistas, expertos, estudiosos y conocedores del arte, así como de aquellos quienes no tienen un ojo entrenado para el arte.
