Qué piensan en realidad los altos ejecutivos sobre los directores de mercadotecnia

Los directores de mercadotecnia están bajo una enorme presión. Se espera que siempre entreguen resultados mejores para las actividades de mercadotecnia, que manejen la explosión de los canales para los clientes y que dominen una estrategia de atención al cliente, mientras que todavía utilizan iniciativas tácticas anteriores como campañas publicitarias. Con razón el promedio de tiempo que ocupan el cargo es el más corto de todos los puestos en la alta dirigencia.

Para comprender de qué manera evalúan los directores de mercadotecnia sus capacidades, y para ver qué tanto las demuestran según sus colegas, encuestamos a 575 altos ejecutivos de la Fortune 500, principalmente directores ejecutivos, directores financieros, directores de informática y directores de tecnología) y realizamos 19 entrevistas a profundidad. He aquí lo que encontramos:

LOS DIRECTORES DE MERCADOTECNIA SUFREN DE UNA CRISIS DE CONFIANZA. Tan solo el cinco por ciento de los directores de mercadotecnia tiene plena confianza en su capacidad de afectar la toma de decisiones estratégicas y el rumbo general del negocio y de obtener apoyo de sus pares para sus iniciativas. Es la autoevaluación más baja de cualquiera de los altos ejecutivos. Sin embargo hay buenas noticias:

LA FALTA DE CONFIANZA DE LOS DIRECTORES DE MERCADOTECNIA ES EN BUENA PARTE INJUSTIFICADA. La mayoría de los altos ejecutivos califica el desempeño de los directores de mercadotecnia mejor de lo que lo hacen los mismos directores de mercadotecnia. En casi todos los casos, la mayoría de los altos ejecutivos respeta —y se apoya en— la experiencia del director de mercadotecnia y sienten que ellos cumplen de manera eficaz en muchos frentes.

LOS DIRECTORES DE SEGURIDAD Y DIRECTORES DE OPERACIONES AÚN NECESITAN CONVENCERSE UN POCO MÁS. Los directores de seguridad son especialmente dudosos respecto de la capacidad de los directores de mercadotecnia al momento de demostrar un impacto financiero y persuadir a otros para que apoyen sus iniciativas. Los directores de operaciones quieren que los directores de mercadotecnia mejoren sus esfuerzos de manera generalizada, en especial al momento de demostrar un impacto financiero.

LOS DIRECTORES DE MERCADOTECNIA DEBERÍAN APROVECHAR SUS FORTALEZAS. Si hay un área en la que los altos ejecutivos nos dicen que deben concentrarse los directores de mercadotecnia, es en la colaboración. Tan solo el diecisiete por ciento de los altos ejecutivos en nuestro estudio mencionó haber colaborado con directores de mercadotecnia en los últimos doce meses. En términos más generales, los directores de mercadotecnia deberían buscar la manera de usar su conocimiento sobre los clientes para ayudarles a sus colegas ejecutivos a alcanzar sus metas. Por último, los directores de mercadotecnia deberían hacer uso del apoyo de su más grande defensor, el director ejecutivo, pidiéndole que respalde sus esfuerzos colaborativos.
