Este miércoles Google, de Alphabet Inc. anunció que fabricó una computadora que alcanza la «supremacía cuántica», la cual puede realizar un cálculo que llevaría a las supercomputadoras más rápidas  unos 10,000 años en tan sólo 200 segundos.

Los resultados de las pruebas de Google, que se realizaron utilizando un chip cuántico desarrollado internamente, se publicaron hoy en la revista científica Nature.

“Este logro es el resultado de años de investigación y la dedicación de muchas personas”, dijo el director de ingeniería de Google, Hartmut Neven, en una publicación de blog. “También es el comienzo de un nuevo viaje: descubrir cómo poner en práctica esta tecnología. Estamos trabajando con la comunidad de investigación y tenemos herramientas de código abierto para permitir que otros colaboren con nosotros para identificar nuevas aplicaciones”.

La idea detrás de la computación cuántica es mejorar exponencialmente la velocidad de procesamiento y la potencia de las computadoras para poder simular grandes sistemas, lo que permitiría avances en física, química y otros campos. En lugar de almacenar información en 0 o 1 binarios, como las computadoras clásicas, las computadoras cuánticas dependen de “qubits”, que pueden ser 0 y 1 simultáneamente, aumentando dramáticamente la cantidad de información que puede codificarse.

Pero, al igual que en la inteligencia artificial, hay mucho debate sobre lo que constituye un verdadero avance. Investigadores de International Business Machines Corp. han dicho en un blog esta semana que una simulación de la misma tarea que Google utilizó podía hacerse en 2,5 días en una computadora clásica con suficiente almacenamiento en el disco duro, no 10.000 años. Si la supremacía cuántica significa hacer algo que las computadoras clásicas no pueden, esto no lo es, escribieron.

Las principales tecnológicas del mundo están compitiendo para desarrollar una computadora cuántica que reciba la aprobación de los académicos, y ya hay algunos productos disponibles comercialmente.
