Los resultados preliminares de las elecciones primarias que fueron celebradas el domingo 6 de octubre han dado como ganadores a Gonzalo Castillo por el Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) y a Luis Abinader por el Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM), un juego que se tornó decisivo para la República Dominicana.

Gonzalo Castillo quien fuera ministro de Obras Públicas y Comunicaciones, apoyado por la corriente del presidente Danilo Medina obtuvo 911,923 votos, lo que representa un 48.72%; el expresidente Leonel Fernández obtuvo 885,233 votos, equivalente a 47.29%. Mientras que los candidatos por el PRM, Luis Abinader sacó 283,163 (74.10%) frente a Hipólito Mejía que logró 80,934 (21.18%). El presidente de la Junta Central Electoral, Julio César Castaños Guzmán, aseguró que las primarias fueron un éxito total.

Tanto Castillo como Abinader se dieron por ganadores con el conteo del 100% de los votos. Sin embargo, el exmandatario Fernández cuestionó los resultados de las primarias. Mientras que el expresidente Hipólito Mejía dijo que hablará al país en el momento que la JCE emita los resultados oficiales de las primarias.

Hasta el momento el órgano rector no ha emitido un comunicado oficial de estas elecciones.
