Jim Adams (Nasa): “Las grandes innovaciones proceden de pequeñas empresas con ideas brillantes”

Jim Adams tiene más de 35 años de experiencia aeroespacial. Recientemente retirado de la Nasa, ha dirigido o participado en más de treinta misiones de vuelos espaciales para explorar la Tierra, el Sol y la mayor parte del Sistema Solar. La Agencia le ha otorgado tres medallas por servicio y liderazgo sobresalientes. Es licenciado en Ciencias en Física y tiene un máster en Ciencias en Ingeniería Eléctrica. En su opinión, no todo es tecnología. “Si se fija en grandes compañías como Google, son artísticas, innovadoras y creativas y emplean a artistas y filósofos para ayudarles a estimular la generación de nuevas ideas”, sostiene.

Pregunta: ¿Qué es para usted la innovación?

Respuesta: Es desafiar el status quo y encontrar nuevas soluciones para determinados problemas.

P.: ¿Cuáles cree que serán esos problemas en el futuro?

R.: He estado en una conferencia en Madrid sobre los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible de la ONU y creo que esos son los problemas del futuro. Lo son ya hoy. Esos son los problemas que tenemos que solucionar: el cambio climático, el hambre mundial, la limpieza de los océanos… Todo está relacionado y esos son los desafíos para los próximos siglos.

P.: ¿Quién debe liderar la innovación, las empresas o los gobiernos?

R.: Deben ser ambos. No podemos depender de los gobiernos para que lo hagan todo, pero tampoco de las empresas. Tenemos que encontrar la solución de forma que todo el mundo tenga la misma visión y podamos avanzar juntos en esa dirección. En lugar de tener gobiernos y empresas que luchan unos con otros, deberíamos encontrar un tipo de alianza público-privada para poder avanzar y hacer la vida mejor para todo el mundo.

P.: En sus conferencias habla de que tanto la creatividad como la tecnología son necesarias, pero las grandes empresas del mundo hoy son tecnológicas. ¿La creatividad ha perdido valor?

R.: Si se fija en grandes compañías como Google, son artísticas, innovadoras y creativas y emplean a artistas y filósofos para ayudarles a estimular la generación de nuevas ideas. Incluso en una empresa como Amazon hay creatividad de un modo en que el mundo no ha visto antes, y no sólo tecnológica. Pero también hay otras empresas que ignoran esa parte del ser humano, y cuando eso ocurre no estás aprovechando todo el potencial de la humanidad. Cuando no abrazas tus emociones en lo que haces, no estás aprovechando todo nuestro potencial.

P.: ¿Las máquinas podrán llegar a desarrollar esas habilidades?

R.: No, por mucho que la ciencia ficción nos quiera hacer pensar que eso es posible. Puede que algún día, pero en estos momentos del partido no lo creo. Los robots continuarán siendo tecnología diseñada para hacer la vida de los humanos en la tierra más fácil. No creo que vayan a ser emocionales y autosuficientes.

P.: ¿No le ve ese potencial a la inteligencia artificial?

R.: La inteligencia artificial tiene un nombre atractivo, pero en realidad sólo es software de código avanzado que ayuda a las personas a tomar mejores decisiones. La inteligencia artificial no piensa, en realidad. Todavía nos queda un largo camino antes de poder crear un cerebro humano en un ordenador.

P.: Dice que el arte es esencial para las empresas tecnológicas. ¿La tecnología también lo es para industrias creativas, como la moda?

R.: Eso creo. Estuve en una mesa redonda hace un tiempo en la que algunos artistas hablaban sobre cómo la tecnología había sido una herramienta para su arte. P.: En los últimos años se ha cuestionado mucho el uso que las grandes tecnológicas hacen de los datos de sus usuarios. ¿Puede haber un efecto boomerang con la tecnología?

R.: Siempre que hay un gran cambio hay un efecto boomerang, hasta cierto punto. Así que sí, puede que lleguemos a un punto en el que demos marcha atrás y valoremos más nuestra privacidad. Algunas leyes, especialmente en Europa, están ya avanzando en esa dirección. Pero, en general, la tendencia es hacia integrar la tecnología cada vez más en nuestras vidas. Y eso nos permitirá hacer más cosas con el tiempo que tenemos.

P.: En un mundo global hacen falta más recursos. ¿Es un riesgo que unas pocas compañías concentren tanto poder?

R.: No. El riesgo es si comenzamos a poner en marcha políticas o leyes que limiten la habilidad de alguien con una idea brillante de trasladarla al mercado. Los pequeños negocios todavía deben poder sobrevivir en el entorno del futuro, porque de ahí es de donde viene la innovación. P.: A un joven que empieza, ¿qué le recomendaría estudiar?

R.: Como soy ingeniero, probablemente le recomendaría estudiar ingeniería basada en la resolución de problemas, pero sin centrarse tanto como para ignorar el arte en su vida. Así que recomendaría estudiar un graduado amplio.

R.: No creo que tengamos robots como en las películas, pero tendremos asistentes digitales que serán inteligentes y bien informados. Será como que Google anticipe lo que vas a buscar. Eso ocurrirá sin duda. En términos de exploración espacial, sí, viviremos en Marte dentro de cincuenta años. De hecho, creo que dentro de cincuenta años veremos los primeros niños nacidos fuera de la Tierra, una nueva generación nacida en el espacio.

P.: Harán falta filósofos entonces…

R.: ¡Y moda!

P.: Probablemente será la mayor disrupción de la historia. ¿Cómo afectará a la gente de la Tierra?

R.: Creo que eso lo tendrá que decir la gente de la Tierra, cómo reaccionaremos a ser una especie en más de un planeta. Si se fija en la ciencia ficción, hay dos posibles salidas: convertirnos en enemigos o continuar trabajando juntos como humanidad en su conjunto. Mi esperanza es que ocurra esto último.
