Startups de valoración extrema: la nueva raza de unicornios

El panorama global está cambiando radicalmente de la mano de empresas que no hace mucho tiempo eran ‘startups’. Facebook, Google, Space X, entre otras de la misma raza innovadora, no solo tienen en común que desarrollaron soluciones “sin virtual competencia”, sino que también alcanzaron el pináculo de los US$1,000 millones en valor antes del tercer aniversario de operación. Son unicornios.

Las unicornio legan a ser valuadas por más de US$1,000 millones en sus primeros tres años de operaciones. Suelen ser ‘startups’ basadas en tecnología, dirigidas a un nicho de negocio con un mercado casi infinito. Ya hay un más de 300 de estas compañías en el mundo, en los lugares más diversos.

El concepto nació del mundo del capital emprendedor o ‘venture capital’. Se menciona por primera vez en un texto de Aileen Lee, fundadora de Cowboy Ventures. De primera mano vio cómo, sin que éstas empresas tuvieran ingresos relevantes, muchas de ellas ya estaban consiguiendo una inversión asombrosa. Le puso un monto a su valuación para separarlas de las demás: más US$1,000 millones.

¿Qué hace a una empresa unicornio?

Las características que hacen de una ‘startup’ un unicornio es ofrecer una solución o producto a un mercado virtualmente infinito, como los servicios tecnológicos o soluciones de salud; y no cotizar en la bolsa, estima el banco HSBC.

Ya no necesariamente son parte de las redes sociales, aunque muchas surgieron en el ‘boom’ del fenómeno y eso les sirvió para darse a conocer, como Facebook (que ya no es unicornio porque entró a bolsa). En cambio, Space X, la empresa de Elon Musk que coloca satélites y trata de llegar a la luna, no es producto del medio digital.

El mundo de los unicornios

Aunque la ciudad de San Francisco (California) sigue teniendo las oficinas de varias unicornio, los países se han diversificado. Las naciones con mayor número de compañías de este tipo son Estados Unidos, China, Israel e India.

México, la principal economía hispana, tiene dos de éstas empresas. Se trata de Kio Networks (data centers), con sede en Ciudad de México, y Softtek (soluciones de negocios), cuyas oficinas principales se encuentran en Monterrey.

En Estados Unidos no son más de 20 mujeres como CEO de estas empresas”, señala Enterpreneur.

China lidera el fenómeno

En  2018, en China surgieron 97 compañías unicornio lo que equivale a una cada 3.8 días. El Gobierno chino destaca el caso de la empresa Leapmotor (autos eléctricos) que logró una valuación superior a los mil millones de dólares un año, lo que posiciona al talento chino como parte de la carrera por este tipo de movilidad.

Es de mitología la manera en la que estas empresas van pasos adelante en los mercados financieros y en la transformación de la economía.

Los unicornios son ejemplos del poder que puede alcanzar una ‘startup’ cuando la idea de cambiar el mundo se convierte en el negocio.
