Lo que temían los organizadores del Mobile World Congress se ha hecho realidad. El evento más importante de la industria de la telefonía móvil fue cancelado debido a las preocupaciones por la propagación del coronavirus.

“Con el debido respeto al ambiente seguro y saludable en Barcelona y el país anfitrión hoy, GSMA (una organización de operadores móviles y compañías relacionadas, dedicada al apoyo de la normalización, la implementación y promoción del sistema de telefonía móvil GSM) canceló el MWC Barcelona 2020 ante la preocupación global con respecto al brote de coronavirus. La preocupación por los traslados y otras circunstancias, hacen que sea imposible que GSMA celebre el evento”, dijo John Hoffman, director ejecutivo del organizador de la conferencia, GSMA Ltd.

Varias gigantes del sector como Intel Corp., MediaTek Inc., AT&T Inc., Cisco Systems Inc. y Sprint Corp. se unían a Ericsson AB, Sony Corp, entre otras grandes compañías a principios de esta semana para cancelar los planes de asistir al MWC Barcelona, programado para iniciar el próximo 24 de febrero. Intel se retiró del evento por una medida de “mayor precaución”. En tanto, AT&T comunicó que “la decisión más responsable” es no asistir al congreso para proteger a los empleados y clientes.
