Nuevos campus
Amazon no sólo domina el sector del comercio electrónico, sino que su Amazon Web Services es el servicio en la nube más grande del mundo (con Microsoft en el segundo puesto). Pero la mayor jugada maestra de Amazon este año no estuvo en la nube sino muy firmemente enfocada en la tierra.
La medida más importante de Amazon este año tuvo que ver con su muy publicitada decisión de abrir una nueva sede en Estados Unidos, conocida como HQ2. El proceso, que inició en octubre de 2017, duró más de un año y en en un principio incluyó 238 propuestas de posibles candidatos — que prontamente Amazon redujo a 20 finalistas. Al final, Amazon seleccionó a Long Island City en la ciudad de Nueva York y Arlington, en el estado de Virginia. Lo más importante fue que a cambio de su decisión obtuvo miles de millones en concesiones fiscales de parte de esas localidades, algo que los analistas consideraron en extremo generoso y un claro triunfo para Amazon. La gigante de comercio electrónico recibirá US$2,500 millones en incentivos fiscales en total, que están atados a varias metas, pero en particular a la promesa de crear 25,000 empleos en cada locación, con una inversión combinada de US$5,000 millones en los próximos años.

Alexa en todas partes

Pero también apareció en televisores de LG y de Sony, bocinas de Sonos, carros Toyota y Lexus, dispositivos con Windows 10 y un vendaval de productos más, dejando a Siri y Cortana muy atrás y a Google Assistant en un lejano segundo lugar en cuanto a su presencia en productos de terceros.
Amazon fue la empresa del sector que invirtió más en investigación y desarrolloen 2017, que seguramente invirtió en cosas como el desarrollo de sus propios chips para mejorar la inteligencia artificial de Alexa, como se informó este año.
Más y más hardware
A pesar de perder el liderazgo de la novel categoría de las bocinas inteligentes en mayo (frente a la dura competencia de Google con sus bocinas Home), Amazon y su línea Echo tuvieron un sólido 2018, lanzando más producto y actualizando la línea entera en septiembre. Amazon no estuvo exenta de controversias, pero parece haberse librado mejor que otras empresas (ahém, Facebook).
