Debenhams rechaza ayuda financiera. El grupo británico de grandes almacenes ha rechazado una oferta para un préstamo de cuarenta millones de libras (44 millones de euros) presentada por Mike Ashley, dueño del grupo de distribución de material deportivo Sport Direct, que cuenta con una participación del 30% en Debenhams.
En una carta, dirigida al consejero delegado de Debenhams, Sergio Bucher, Ashley explicó que si el grupo de grandes almacenes no acepta el dinero, apenas le quedaran posibilidades de supervivencia, según The Daily Telegraph. Sports Direct cerró el último ejercicio fiscal (finalizado el pasado 29 de abril) con unas ganancias antes de impuestos de 77,5 millones de libras (87,02 millones de euros). Las ventas, por su parte, crecieron un 3,5%, hasta 3.359,5 millones de libras (3.772 millones de euros).
Debenhams, por su parte, se está enfrentando a una de las mayores crisis de su historia. El grupo de grandes almacenes está sumido en una profunda reestructuración que pasa por cerrar un tercio de su red comercial en los próximos meses. Debenhams ha perdido más de un 90% de su valor de mercado desde 2006, cuando comenzó nuevamente a cotizar en la bolsa de Londres, tres años después de haber salida del parqué.
El grupo finalizó el ejercicio 2018 (cerrado el pasado 30 de septiembre) con números rojos de 491,5 millones de libras (556,3 millones de euros). Un año atrás, la compañía obtuvo un beneficio neto de 59 millones de libras (66,7 millones de euros).
