“Vi ideas increíbles, pero no vi marcas construyéndose”: Fernando Sosa, presidente del jurado de Wave Festival

Ha pasado más de una semana desde que finalizara el Wave Festival, que celebra lo mejor de la publicidad en Latinoamérica. Días después, tuvimos esta conversación con Fernando Sosa, presidente del jurado en la versión de 2019. Aparte de los premios, indagamos sobre la publicidad, la fiebre por los premios y los casos y la rareza en la que se han convertido las grandes campañas publicitarias.

Y, sin quererlo, “le picamos” la lengua para que nos dijera cosas como que pocos consumidores se enteran de lo que anuncian las piezas que baten récords en Cannes y que hacen falta verdaderas campañas, integradas, de largo plazo, que construyan marcas.

¿Qué tipo de piezas se vieron este año en el festival?

Fernando Sosa: Seguimos con la tendencia que venimos desde hace un par de años, de hacer ideas cada vez más grandes, con múltiples formatos, ideas que funcionan en distintos formatos y plataformas, cada vez más mezcladas con la tecnología. La publicidad sigue en el rumbo de buscar cómo llegar a la gente por medios nuevos. Y creo que hay una tendencia muy concreta cómo lo visual es predominante, con menos storytelling, donde se resuelve todo más sintéticamente y es más fácil que la gente entienda las cosas

Durante los últimos años ha estado la categoría social & influencer,  pero se ha hablado mucho sobre qué tan pertinente es para las marcas apostarle a los influencers. Como jurados, o de qué manera evalúan estas estrategias…

Para mi manera de ver, hay que mezclar dos cosas: el tono que tienen el influencer de sí mismo y el tono que tiene la marca. La agencia tiene que conectar ambas partes. Me parece que no funciona ningún extremo. Si el cliente le marca al influenciador todo lo que debe hacer, no funciona porque lo desnaturaliza. Y si el influencer hace todo lo que quiera tampoco se vincula la marca. Debe haber un equilibrio. El influencer es un canal más para la publicidad. Y debemos pensar en cómo comunicamos antes que en el qué (el medio).

¿Si hablamos un poco de los resultados por países cómo se ve esto? ¿Qué tanto países diferentes a Brasil o Estados Unidos entran en la lista de los de los más importantes o los más destacados de Wave?

FS: De lo que yo vi , de las categorías que me tocó, obviamente Brasil por un tema de lógico, pues es un festival que se hace en Brasil; Argentina también se destaca. Los de los Estados Unidos no me gustó tanto porque aquí no participan piezas del mercado en general, sino solo las que si dirigen al mercadeo hispano, que no termina de funcionar creativamente. Vi bastante bien a Colombia, Ecuador, algunas cosas de Perú, que son los tres países que están, de a poco, logrando como más contenido de excelencia, lo que antes no pasaba.

¿Qué fue lo que más le sorprendió en cuanto a piezas o ejecuciones?

FS: Me encantó una pieza de Uber, de acá de Brasil… Le dieron un teléfono a un arquero de un equipo de fútbol de primera y, antes de que empiece el partido, con el Maracaná lleno, se puso a ver el teléfono y la gente no lo podía creer… Desató una cadena de mensajes en redes sociales… Y la idea de comparar esto con el momento en que te pones a mirar el teléfono cuando conduces, me encantó. Después había otros, como el de la cerveza Budweisser, que ya había visto en otros festivales.

Y ya que tocamos el tema, ¿en cuanto a originalidad se ven nuevas piezas o hay un poco de piezas recurrentes que van y vuelven por estos festivales?

FS: Eso hablábamos con varios de los jurados.  Con la ubicación de tiene el Wave, me parece que es como el final de una camada. Las piezas nuevas van a empezar ahora en Cannes. Siento que son muy pocas las agencias que vienen al Wave a testear algo nuevo. Me parece que la ubicación en la línea cronológica de los festivales hace que acá sea donde termina la vuelta.

¿Y esto es bueno para el festival o es algo que podría mejorar?

FS: Evidentemente lo hacen siempre en el mismo tiempo. Les funciona. Pero yo lo haría un poco antes, porque me parece que llega todo desgastado; casi que el Grand Prix lo votas con pocas ganas, porque lo has visto tantas veces, en tantos festivales. Aunque es entendible que es difícil competir con Cannes en este sentido, pues todas las agencias llevamos meses preparando Cannes. Ese es el momento en que queremos poner todo lo nuevo.

¿Esto hace que sea difícil juzgar?

Sí, para mí, se llega bastante influenciado a evaluar las piezas, por los resultados de otros festivales. Si tienes una pieza que ya ganó Grand Prix en Cannes, cuando la comparas con otros trabajos latinoamericanos, ya es difícil inclinarse por otra cosa. Aunque para mí es más prestigioso ganar en One Show o en D&AD, porque allí no siempre lo que gana en Cannes se lleva todos los premios. Hay un tema de otro tipo de prestigio y de otra búsqueda en cuanto a publicidad.

¿En cuanto a las agencias, qué tanto se de participación de las redes contra las independientes? ¿Cómo se comporta el Wave en ese sentido?

Yo creo que el Wave es un poco más amistoso. Siento que, por lo que te decía, como es el último festival de toda la ronda, ya hay un clima más de pensar en que lo que ganó ganó, un clima de buena onda. En otros festivales hay otra vibra, con menos camaradería. Aquí el ambiente es distinto.

¿Y qué espera de Cannes?

Lo que espero siempre: que me dé ganas de seguir haciendo publicidad. Cada vez que voy, vuelvo renovado. Me gusta entender un poco donde estoy yo nivel mundial, con respecto a mi trabajo y me gusta entender un poco hacia dónde va la industria, aunque a veces lo entienda y no lo comparta, como en me ha sucedido en los últimos años. Pero siempre hay cuatro o cinco trabajos que son increíbles y que te enorgullecen como industria. Que, por lo menos, para mí, no tienen que ver con charity o positive change, sino trabajos reales de marcas reales.

¿Qué le preocupa de hacia dónde va la industria?

Me preocupa un poco que se la industria se mire tanto al ombligo,  me preocupa que el trabajo de los publicistas es cada vez más para los publicistas y menos para para mi mamá; es decir, las piezas que ganan grandes premios en festivales son desconocidas para miles de consumidores. Son miles y miles de creativos haciendo cosas para que mi mamá no sepa que pasan. La verdad es que nunca en mi vida oí hablar a ningún amigo sobre lo que pasa en Cannes. Siento que el invento del caso llegó a que hablemos de lo que hicimos en una esquina en una hora determinada y ya. A la larga, las grandes marcas siguen siendo las grandes marcas. Son las que están hace años haciendo que una marca crezca y eso es lo que sigue midiendo la temperatura. Nike hizo que generaciones dejen de estar sentadas en un sillón y corran. Es así de simple, pero les tomó 30 años hacerlo.

La publicidad de hoy se está perdiendo en que hay muchas ideítas chiquititas que están buenas, pero no hay campañas que se vengan gestando desde hace años. En Wave vi ideas increíbles, que me hubiesen encantado que se me ocurran, pero no vi ninguna marca construyéndose. Y al final del día estamos acá para construir marcas, no para tener ideas puntuales.

En su experiencia, ¿cuáles han sido las últimas grandes campañas que hemos visto, en Latinoamérica o en el mundo?

Es una pregunta difícil. Yo creo que las marcas de siempre. Lo que se viene haciendo en Google, en Nike, en Netflix me encanta.

¿Pero es difícil recordar una campaña en particular?

Y… me cuesta. Por ejemplo “find your greatness” de Nike me encantó. Soy un fanático de Wieden y me parece que todo lo que hacen tienen una lógico y una coherencia que es increíble. En Argentina, por toda la crisis que estamos pasando, cuesta ver alguna campaña increíble. Y a nivel regional siento que está lo de Budweisser, pero después no vi nada relacionado con esa misma acción. En cambio, sí ves que Nike conecta una acción con otra más adelante.

También me encanta Behind the Mac. Cuando vi las piezas en Nueva York, detuve el auto y me quedé quieto. Me impresionaron. Vienen trabajando la marca desde hace años. Aunque la ejecución no era increíble, el pensamiento de todo lo que pasa detrás de una Mac es buenísimo. Esas campañas grandes y conceptuales me encantan. Me gustó como el cambio de paradigma de la marca para dónde fueron y cómo lo encararon. Y me vuelve loco verlo en un Billboard en Nueva York.

Lo que está haciendo Juan Cabral me parece increíble. Este director de cine argentino que hizo las últimas películas grandes de Ikea. Cada vez que veo su trabajo veo a un “pibe” que está en otra liga completamente diferente, que está por encima de la publicidad y nos regala su talento a los publicistas para que lo sigamos. Es increíble.
