El coronavirus también penaliza a la economía latinoamericana. El Banco Mundial prevé que el Producto Interior Bruto (PIB) de la región se contraiga un 4,6% en 2020 como consecuencia de la pandemia Covid-19.
De esta manera, el organismo respalda las previsiones de otras entidades, como la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe de Naciones Unidas (Cepal), que preveía que la economía de la región cayera un 1,8% en 2020, y el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID), que estimaba una contracción de hasta el 5,5%.
Según el Banco Mundial, los países más castigados por el impacto del coronavirus serán México y Ecuador, que registrarán caídas de sus economías cercanas al 6%. En Argentina, la contracción será del 5,2%, mientras que en Brasil y Perú del 5% y del 4,7%, respectivamente. La economía colombiana, por su parte, caerá un 2% y en Chile un 3%.
El Banco Mundial estima que la economía de la región retomará la senda positiva en 2021, con un crecimiento del PIB del 2,6%, aunque países de mayor peso económico como Brasil y México podrían necesitar hasta dos años para recuperarse.
