Nuevo gigante en la fabricación de bolsos. Dos de los principales proveedores de accesorios de moda en piel con sede en Hong Kong unen fuerzas. Luen Thai ha comprado a su competidor Universal Elite, creando un conglomerado que sumará alrededor de 50.000 trabajadores y siete fábricas en Camboya, China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Filipinas, Tailandia y Vietnam.
Luen Thai, propiedad de la familia que le da nombre, es uno de los mayores proveedores globales de moda y accesorios. Luen Thai cuenta con una plantilla de 30.000 empleados y con factorías en países bajo el sistema de preferencias GSP (con beneficios arancelarios con la Unión Europea y Estados Unidos).
Universal Elite, por su parte, está especializada en el segmento de la pequeña marroquinería para marcas premium. Después de la operación, cuyo importe no ha trascendido, Universal Elite continuará pilotada por su hasta ahora presidente, Eric Chu. La estructura de la compañía se integrará como una unidad estratégica de negocios dentro de su nuevo propietario.
Luen Thai, que cotiza en la bolsa de Hong Kong, hundió su cifra de negocio en 2017, con un retroceso del 15,4%, hasta 768,4 millones de dólares (662,9 millones de euros). El grupo cerró el ejercicio con una mejora del 19%, hasta 21,9 millones de dólares (18,9 millones de euros).
