La tecnología WiFi no necesita presentaciones. Cualquiera que haya accedido a internet en los últimos diez años seguramente lo ha hecho a través de una conexión inalámbrica wifi. Es más, los routers que ofrecen las empresas de telecomunicaciones cuentan con acceso wifi, relegando el clásico Ethernet al olvido o al uso por parte de usuarios más expertos.

Lo que conocemos de esta red es un estándar, una tecnología que tiene sus reglas y sus especificaciones, normas que todas las empresas que fabrican o emplean wifi deben cumplir para obtener la certificación oficial. De velar por el respeto a este estándar se encarga la Wi-Fi Alliance, una asociación compuesta por los grandes de la industria y que tiene su sede en Austin, Texas, y como todo estándar, debe evolucionar, cambiar, mejorar.

Después de años con el mismo estándar, esta tecnología va a subir de categoría. Este año ha sido elegido para comenzar la implantación del WiFi 6 y el despliegue de este nuevo estándar a todos los dispositivos que salgan al mercado.

Desde que en 2014 se estableciera el WiFi 802.11 ac, han llegado a nuestras vidas una gran cantidad de nuevos dispositivos capaces de saturar las redes inalámbricas, suin contar del uso que hacemos de internet. Por lo tanto, empieza a ser imprescindible aumentar la velocidad de nuestras conexiones.

Su nombre es 802.11 ax, aunque se le conocerá más como WiFi 6 y es que la organización ha decidido darle a cada estándar un nombre más sencillo de recordar e identificar. Gracias a este cambio los símbolos que encontremos en cada dispositivo con conexión WiFi será también más fáciles de reconocer.

Al ser el nuevo estándar para los próximos años, éste llega con una mejora significativa de velocidad. Mientras que el anterior o WiFi 5 es capaz de alcanzar los 3.5 Gbps, el nuevo WiFi 6 contará con una velocidad máxima de 9.6 Gbps.

Esta es la respuesta sencilla, pero en realidad ambas velocidades son máximos teóricos por lo que los dispositivos nunca serán tan rápidos. Es más, al dividirse por toda la red de dispositivos, un ordenador nunca podría contar con una velocidad de transferencia tan alta.
